Last Sunday, the Grade 9 learners of Bekamo School set aside their books and pens for something different — a journey of the heart. They travelled to Ndaragwa Children’s Home, a place where orphaned and special children find care, warmth, and belonging.
When they arrived, the air was filled with shy smiles that soon melted into laughter. The learners sang, played, and shared meals with the children, breaking down every barrier with kindness. They carried with them not only food, clothes, and stationery but also time, attention, and joy — gifts that cannot be packed into boxes.
“This visit was not just about giving material things,” said Ms. Rebecca, one of the teachers who accompanied the learners. “It was about showing our Grade 9 students that compassion is as important as knowledge. As they prepare for their KJSEA exams, they must also remember that life’s bigger test is how we treat one another.”
For the learners, the day was a moment of reflection. They are only weeks away from the Kenya Junior Secondary Education Assessment (KJSEA), and with it, the close of their junior school journey. Many have spent the year buried in books and exam preparation, but this trip reminded them of something greater.
Walking through the children’s home, they realized that education is not only about passing exams but also about learning to live with purpose and empathy. As Ms. Rebecca reflected: “We want them to leave junior school not just as good students, but as good people. Today, I believe they truly understood that lesson.”
The laughter and songs they shared with the children of Ndaragwa will linger long after the KJSEA papers are done. For in giving, the learners discovered something precious — that true success is measured not only by marks, but by the lives we touch along the way.
